Birth Companions recently joined forces with Women for Refugee Women, Royal College of Midwives, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Medical Justice and Maternity Action to publish a joint briefing against the so-called ‘Illegal Migration Bill’, which proposes new powers to detain pregnant women seeking asylum indefinitely.
The proposed new powers would prevent many women fleeing persecution from claiming asylum in the UK and remove the 72-hour time limit on the detention of pregnant women - allowing pregnant women to be detained indefinitely and risking huge harm to them and their unborn babies.
Thank you to everyone who shared our briefing and helped us amplify this message. We've seen great support on social media, and a number of Members of Parliament spoke against these proposals during the debate in the House of Commons earlier this month.
Now, Women for Refugee Women are urging everyone who is
concerned about these proposals to write to your MP.
They have created a 'Write to your MP' tool, to support constituents to urge their MPs to oppose to these cruel proposals. The tool is quick and easy to use, providing a letter template which can be personalised to reflect your own concerns and experiences. The tool can be found here:
