Become a birth companion
Birth Companions have a small team of paid staff but we rely almost entirely on our dedicated team of volunteers to provide vital support to the women who use our services both in prison and the community. We are always keen to recruit new volunteers to work with and support Birth Companions. Most of our volunteers work in the community and a smaller number work with women in prison, but some volunteers work with both groups. All of our volunteers receive thorough training and support. Our training period is relatively long, simply to ensure that trainees can develop a full understanding of the challenges and complexities of working with vulnerable women.
All trainees and active birth companions need to provide current references and be CRB checked. As we are based in London, volunteers need to live as locally as possible to enable us to deliver our services in the London area.
Unfortunately we are unable to accomodate requests for work experience or elective placements for midwifery courses.
If you are interested in setting up a group to work with vulnerable or isolated women outside of London, we are always interested in new collaborations and initiatives and would be keen to talk hear from you so please contact us.
